Community Group Study Notes
-
Have someone in your group give a brief recap of Sunday’s message, highlighting the primary Scripture passages and main idea of the message.
-
How did this message strengthen, confirm and/or correct your previous ideas about our reputation as Christ’s Church?
-
How would you respond to a family member or friend who said, “I love Jesus, but I hate the church”?
-
Interact with this quote “When people say, ‘I know God forgives me, but I can't forgive myself,’ they mean that they have failed an idol, whose approval is more important than God's.” (Tim Keller, Counterfeit Gods). Do you agree with this statement? What are some ways to figure out the idols in our lives?
-
What idol do you need to turn your back on? Consider: the idols of politics, relationships, or success. What steps can you take to rid yourself of this idol?
-
In what ways can you apply today’s message to your life?
Action Step
Meet with a trusted family member or friend this week. Share with them what you wrote on your card on Sunday: “I’m turning my back on ____________________ and I’m turning to Jesus to ask _________________.” Ask for accountability in turning your back on this idol and spend time in prayer together.

Mobilization Challenge
Consider someone in your life who has a negative perception of the church. What can you do this week to love this person like Jesus? As you take this step, pray that God will use you to represent the Bride of Christ well.
