Lead Us Not Into Temptation
This, Then, Is How You Should Pray
Pastor Jerry Gillis - November 28, 2021Community Group Study Notes
-
Have someone in your group give a brief recap of Sunday’s message, highlighting the main Scripture passages and the purpose of praying “lead us not into temptation.”
-
What was one thing that God was showing you through the sermon? How did the sermon change your perspective on temptation and trials?
-
Why is our submission to God necessary in order to resist the devil? How are these two linked?
-
Read 1 Corinthians 10:12-13 out loud. Talk about a time that you know God gave you “a way out” of temptation – and you took it. What did this experience teach you?
-
What trial or test are you going through right now? With this sermon and our conversation in mind, what action steps do you need to take in order to draw near to God and resist the enemy?
-
How can we as a group help you take these action steps? Spend time praying for and encouraging each other.
Action Step
Start your day by reading Hebrews 4:12-16 every morning this week. Try reading this passage before you reach for your phone or any other media. Then, consider these action steps:
-
As you study the Scripture, pray and reflect on God’s Word and deliverance. Use these prompts to guide your reflection:
-
What thoughts, actions, or temptations should you ask God to deliver you from this week?
-
What Scripture(s) can you read and reflect on to resist falling into temptation? Write one of them down on an index card and carry it with you this week.
-
What does it mean to you to know that Jesus sympathizes with our weaknesses? Ask God to remind you daily of his mercy and grace.
-
Is there any sin or battle with temptation that you’ve been trying to hide from others (even though nothing is hidden from God)? Read Proverbs 28:13. Prayerfully consider a close and trusted friend whose faith is strong enough to help you “confess and renounce” these things. Grab a coffee with them and confide in them – spending time in prayer together and developing a plan to leave this sin and/or temptation behind you.
