Public Statement Regarding Former Junior High Youth Volunteer: 1989

In July 2020, our leadership was made aware of allegations from 1989 against a former junior high youth volunteer, Edward Batt. These allegations came through a lawsuit initiated by the law office of Hogan Willig representing Jason Freier (this is public information). Until that point, our current leadership was unaware of these allegations related to Mr. Freier and Mr. Batt and we have been unable to find any supporting evidence to substantiate the claims being made. We can confirm that Mr. Batt was never an employee of The Chapel but that he was a volunteer in a number of capacities during that time frame, including working with junior high students. We are also aware that Mr. Batt was convicted in 2000 as a level 3 sex offender and remains on the sex offender registry, but we do not believe that Mr. Freier's claim is related to this conviction. We are committed to investigating further by supporting any request of law enforcement or the court system to seek truth, accountability, and healing for all involved.
