Discussion Questions
- In 1 John 2:3-6, John connects knowing God with obeying Him. Why do you think obedience is such an important indicator of a genuine relationship with God?
- Pastor Jerry noted that "we obey who we love and trust." How does trust influence our willingness to obey God? Where is that connection evident in your life?
- John says that loving our brothers and sisters is evidence that we are walking in the light (1 John 2:7-11). What are some practical ways we can actively demonstrate that kind of love within our church and community?
- In verses 15-17, John warns against loving the world. Which of the three temptations, the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, or the pride of life, do you find most challenging, and why?
- Pastor Jerry challenged us to consider Christ's commands (love enemies, forgive offenders, make disciples, guard against greed, etc.). Which command is easiest for you to embrace, and which is most difficult? What might that reveal about your heart right now?
Action Step
- Spend time in prayer this week asking God to reveal one specific area where you have been resisting His leadership. Commit to taking one concrete step of obedience.
- Set aside intentional time each day this week for Scripture and prayer. Ask God not simply for information about Him, but for a deeper knowledge of Him that leads to joyful obedience.
- Choose one person, a family member, friend, neighbor, coworker, or fellow believer, and intentionally show Christlike love through encouragement, service, forgiveness, or generosity this week.
